POSITION SUMMARY

SRS Energy has an opening for a Director of Process R&D at its headquarters in Dexter, Michigan.  This facility and the capabilities of its researchers deliver science and technology that is directly related to the nation's alternative energy future. Building upon a history of over 15 years of custom separations development, and implementation and operation of systems at over 2000 client sites, SRS is developing a novel separation technology aimed at the algal biofuel market. The Director of Process R&D will lead the RD&D activities necessary to provide the algae biofuels industry a technically and economically viable solution capable of recovering maximum financial value from their harvested biological crops.

This key position reports directly to the President. The Director of Process R&D is responsible for all aspects of research, development and product demonstration within the company.   Specific responsibilities include developing and execution of a comprehensive technology RD&D roadmap. Creation of standard R&D management tools and processes; management of internal and external R&D resources including the operation of our onsite analytical laboratory. The Director of Process R&D will have a hands on role in the lab and will lead the RD&D team through the process of innovation, verification and process design, culminating in the successful development of working products to the algae industry.   RD&D activities will focus on technologies that maximize product value from the algae to biofuel systems. Research topics include, but are not limited to: chemical / fluid processing, industrial distillation, oil separation, chemical separation, process chemistries and environmental/wastewater treatment.

Qualified applicants will have a track record of success in building an R&D function/organization, managing and developing people, and setting strategy in the chemical processing and oleochemical or edible oil industry. The incumbent should have chemical / process engineering expertise, a demonstrated ability to manage a multi-disciplined team and bring new ideas and best practices to our organization.  The position requires the direct management of our analytical laboratory services, experience in setting up LIMS (laboratory information management systems) and managing work-flow through high-volume analytical laboratories is highly desirable. Additionally, the Director of Process R&D will be responsible for leading patent applications and grant-writing efforts associated with the development of our key process technologies. Demonstrated success in technical writing in this field is desirable.

Candidates must have a strong research management background in the chemical, pharmaceutical or oleochemical industry.  Strong technical skills, 10+ years successful experience in RD&D activities, leading R&D teams from proof of concept and prototype systems to design and operation of bench and field pilot plants.  An advanced degree is required, in a relevant Scientific or Engineering discipline. Qualified applicants will be strategic in nature, ideally have worked for a start-up or entrepreneurial company, and have demonstrated strong research management experience.  Additionally, excellent written and oral communication skills are a must.  The ideal candidate is looking to be part of a startup, fast moving technology driven organization.  Having worked for a company that manufactures chemical processing or biomass biofuel technologies would make you a perfect fit.  This is a leadership role at SRS where we promote a strong team environment.

Candidate must be willing to relocate to Dexter, Michigan area. Position requires travel to customer sites and various SRS partners in Michigan and other states.
